Include key physical traits such as hair color, eye color, height, age, and any other distinguishing features. These details are particularly helpful in avoiding inconsistencies as you write, ensuring characters’ appearances remain stable.
Track personality traits and backstories
For each character, jot down key personality traits (e.g., stubborn, compassionate, introverted) as well as their backstory. This information will help you understand your characters better and ensure they act in accordance with their established personalities and histories.
Document relationships
Note how each character is connected to others. Whether it’s family ties, romantic connections, or antagonistic relationships, documenting these details will help keep your story cohesive.
Update as you write
A character list isn’t static. As your story progresses and characters develop, update the list with new details, evolving traits, and shifting relationships.
Colour-code or categorise
If you’re writing a large or complex novel, consider color-coding or categorising characters based on their role (e.g., protagonist, antagonist, sidekick). This can help you quickly locate the information you need without feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of entries.
